At 1.47pm this afternoon the pagers sounded and the Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ and her volunteer crew were tasked to launch by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.

A 20-foot speedboat, with two persons onboard, had suffered engine failure off Porthcurno.

At 1.52pm, just as the Inshore lifeboat was about to launch from Newlyn the crew were redirected to another incident - a concerned member of the public had contacted HM Coastguard via the 999 system and reported seeing a 17-foot fast angling boat, with two persons onboard, in difficulties about 400 yards off the shore at Rinsey Head - the occupants of this vessel were waving a paddle to draw attention to their predicament.

In view of the fact that the vessel at Porthcurno was safely at anchor, the ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ sped across Mount’s Bay to Rinsey Head. On arrival they found that two fishing boats from Porthleven already had the casualty under tow. The Inshore lifeboat ‘Stood By’ for a short time and then returned to Newlyn.

In the meantime the all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched from Newlyn, headed down the western shore, and located the casualty vessel at anchor off Porthcurno - the speedboat was towed back to Penzance Harbour.

ILB Crew - Andrew Wood (Helm), James Roberts and Amy Smith.

ALB Crew - Cox Patch Harvey, Mech Tony Rendle, Dan Sell, Andrew Stevens, Adrian Thomas and Neville Pittman.

Busy evening for Penlee Lifeboat volunteers, Sennen Cove Lifeboat Volunteers, local Cliff Rescue Teams, Falmouth Coastguard and Ambulance crews after three persons rescued in two separate incidents.
Penlee ILB ‘Mollie & Ivor Dent was tasked at 19:57 following reports of two persons injured after falling from the foot path onto the beach at Pedny Vounder.
Penzance Cliff Rescue team who were attending requested the ILB to conduct a medical evacuation as it was to dangerous to extract the casualties by ropes up the Cliff.
At the same time Sennen Cove ILB were tasked to a person who had also fallen and suffered severe injuries at Porth Chapel. The Coastguard Helicopter paramedic Lands End Cliff Rescue Team and an Ambulance paramedic were also on scene.
Sennen Cove All Weather Lifeboat that had just towed in a dismasted yacht to Newlyn from NW the Wolf was also on scene.
At 20:12 Penlee All Weather Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ was also tasked.
Sennen Cove ILB successfully got the injured person at Porth Chapel on board with both paramedics and then headed towards Penlee ALB, the casualty and paramedics were transferred to Penlee ALB who then headed back to Newlyn Harbour, the casualty was put in an ambulance and taken to the heliport at Long Rock and flown to Derriford hospital.
Penlee ILB then transferred the two injured casualties to Sennen Cove Alb who also headed to Newlyn and moored alongside Penlee Lifeboat, both crews carried to casualties to the Penlee Lifboat station where a paramedic was waiting.
Sennen Cove Lifeboat left Newlyn and returned to Sennen after two services at around 22:30.
At 01:00 the casualties were taken to hospital by ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
This was a multi agency scenario where everyone worked brilliantly as one team  resulting in three people being rescued after suffering injuries from falls, well done all.

It’s been a very busy week for our volunteer crews at Penlee - both lifeboats have been in action in Mount’s Bay doing what they do best…saving lives at sea!
At 6.57am this morning the crew pagers sounded yet again and the all-weather Severn Class lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ was tasked to launch by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre. Reports had been received that a 60-foot scallop trawler, with 5 crew onboard, had gone aground just off the shore near Battery Rocks, Penzance.
As always the crew response was very good & extremely quick. The Ivan Ellen sped across the bay and was quickly on scene.
Coxswain Patch Harvey and his crew immediately assessed the situation, and due to the fact that the tide was dropping, a tow rope was attached to the trawler - using her twin 1,250hp diesel engines the Ivan Ellen lifeboat then pulled the scalloper clear of the rocks. Another 30 minutes later and the situation could have been very different.
The trawler was towed to deeper water to the east of Penzance where a full examination of the vessel was carried out by her crew - the Ivan Ellen stood-by with salvage pumps at the ready. Thankfully no damage or leaks were found and the trawler was escorted back to Newlyn by the lifeboat. On arrival the casualty vessel was placed on a drying birth for a full damage examination to take place later today.
Crew - Coxswain Patch Harvey, Mechanic Marcel Le Bretton, Gary Johnson, Amy Smith, Max Rowe, and a first ‘shout’ for new crew member, Nick Henshaw.
Weather - Southerly 3-4, visibility good.

Penlee All Weather Lifeboat tasked to assist injured french fisherman.
Ivan Ellen Penlee’s Severn Class launched just before 4pm this afternoon to conduct a medical evacuation of an injured Fisherman on board the French Trawler Itasca, the vessel that was fishing south of Mounts Bay during storm Evert meet the Lifeboat 2 miles south of Newlyn.
The Lifeboat manoeuvred alongside and the casualty was helped aboard by the lifeboat crew.
He was than taken to Newlyn Harbour and driven to hospital.
It’s been an extremely busy and testing 24 hrs for our local crews during Storm Evert especially our colleagues from Sennen Cove and St Mary’s who battled throughout the night assisting numerous yachts that got into difficulties in storm force winds around the Isles of Scilly, both crews did an incredible job as wall as Falmouth Coastguard who were co-ordinating multiple rescues.

Re:Penlee Lifeboat

Date Posted:30/07/2021 5:20 AMCopy HTML

At 9.50pm last night the crew of the all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ received a launch request from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre. Reports had been received that a 55-foot local fishing vessel, with 4 persons on board, required immediate assistance in poor weather conditions in Mount’s Bay.
The fishing vessel had fouled its propeller while hauling in a Seine net. It was unable to manoeuvre due to the strong SE winds and had drifted towards, then collided with, the Trinity House vessel ’Galatea’ which was at anchor south of Penzance. The net then got tangled in the Galatea’s propellers.
Penlee Lifeboat launched quickly and arrived on scene at 10:05pm. After a quick assessment it was decide to try and get a rope on the fishing vessel to prevent any further collision with the MV Galatea - with the large net still in the sea there was a real danger that the lifeboat would also get her propellers fouled.
Using the Ivan Ellen’s large spotlights to keep clear of the net, the lifeboat crew managed to connect a rope to the fishing vessel. The net was cut away and the fishing vessel was towed safety and slowly back towards Newlyn.
Due to the force 6-7 SE wind and rough sea towing a vessel in through the gaps at low tide can be risky due to the large waves breaking across the gaps. However, the ‘Ivan Ellen’ towed the fishing vessel into the harbour without any problems, bringing it safely through the gaps to a berth at Newlyn Fish Market.
The ‘Ivan Ellen’ lifeboat returned to station at 11.30pm where she was refuelled and made ready for her next service.
Both vessels are expected to have divers down this morning to cut away the net that fouled their propellers.
Crew - Patch ( Coxswain), Craig Neal ( Mechanic ), David Pascoe, Ben Keogh, Will Treneer, James Roberts and Richard Nicholls.

Yesterday at 13:50 Penlee Lifeboat the ‘Ivan Ellen’ was tasked by Falmouth Coastguard to locate and assist a powered vessel with four persons on board that had suffered engine failure and drifting very close to rocks only near Logan Rock.
While Penlee Lifeboat under the command of deputy Coxswain Neville Pitman proceeded towards the initial position two jet skis had managed to connect a rope to the broken down vessel and started towing it towards Penzance.
The Lifeboat meet the vessels just off Lamorna Cove and after making sure everyone was ok the Lifeboat took over the tow and towed the casualty vessel to Newlyn Harbour arriving at 14.45.
At 11:50 this morning Penlee Inshore Lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ under the command of Amy Smith launched after receiving a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguard.
Two persons and a dog got cut off by the tide to the west of Mousehole near Reginnis Hill.
Once located the Lifeboat manoeuvred close enough to the rocky shoreline, the crew quickly helped the two persons and the dog on board and relocated them to Lamorna.
Penzance Cliff Rescue team meet the casualties just to make sure they were ok and gave some safety advice.
Penlee Inshore Lifeboat returned to Newlyn and was made ready for service at 13:00.

Penlee volunteer lifeboat crew  launched to three separate incidents over the weekend.
The first incident occurred on Friday evening when the pagers went off at 7.34pm - a 26-foot yacht with two persons on board suffered engine failure 5 miles south of Newlyn and with a strong northerly wind the yacht struggled to make any headway.
Out all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched at 19:40 and arrived on scene at 19:55. After a quick assessment the coxswain decided to tow the yacht to Newlyn, a rope was connected and both boats arrived in Newlyn at 21:00.
At 10.43am on Sunday morning the crew pagers sounded again this time the Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ was tasked to launch by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre to locate 2 kayakers about a mile SW of St Michael’s Mount. The watch keepers at the NCI Penzance were concerned after losing sight of them and alerted the Coastguard.
Under the command of Amy Smith, her first shout as helmsman, the kayakers were located - although safe and well the NE wind had increased to 20 knots so one kayak was towed towards Long Rock beach to better sea conditions.
Later on Sunday, at 16.27 the crew pagers sounded again…this time a 20m ketch with 2 persons and a dog onboard had suffered steering failure 28 miles from Newlyn and required assistance.
Penlee Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ under the command of station coxswain Patch Harvey launched at 16:35.
Just before 18:00 the lifeboat arrived on scene and decided the safest option would be to take the yacht under tow back to Newlyn. The tow line and bridles were connected and despite a NE 5 blowing a steady speed of 6.5 knots was made.
At 10:30 the ketch was safely towed to a berth in Newlyn Harbour, the lifeboat was washed down ready for its next service.
A busy weekend for our crews here and around the Cornish coast with several other local lifeboats launching to other incidents.

At 1.20pm this afternoon the Penlee Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ launched on service to assist a person and 2 dogs cut off by the tide just east of Porthleven Harbour.
Porthleven Coastguard Team and Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked to attend this incident.
Once on scene the ILB dropped a crew man ashore to help the casualty, but due to the location and shallow rocky approach it was decided that the safest rescue method was extraction by land recovery.
This was agreed by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre who were coordinating all the rescue assets.
The Coastguard Rescue Teams set up their equipment and one by one the dogs and person were winched to safety - Penlee Inshore remained on scene to provide safety cover.
At 3.30pm the lifeboat was released and arrived back in Newlyn at 4.00pm - a fairly long day for our volunteer crews after launching on exercise in the morning, then cheering on our inspirational supporter Elliot Furse as he finished his sponsored walk to Newlyn harbour.
Once again a superb effort by everyone involved.

Another launch this evening for the Penlee Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’. At 7.00pm, a small rib with three persons onboard, broke down about 200-metres east of Penzance Harbour. A fresh easterly wind was blowing the rib towards rocks near the Pump House behind Penzance Railway Station.
Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre requested the help of our Inshore lifeboat and after a quick launch the volunteer crew arrived on scene.
Our colleagues from Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team were also tasked and provided valuable VHF comms between the Coastguard and the Inshore lifeboat.
Thankfully a local boat saw the danger and managed to connect a tow rope to the rib - the ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ then escorted both vessels into Penzance Harbour.

At 4.15pm this afternoon the Penlee all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ and her volunteer crew launched on service after receiving a tasking request from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.
A 10-metre fishing vessel with two persons onboard had suffered engine failure 9 miles SSE of Newlyn. As the lifeboat proceeded to the scene the experienced skipper reported that the engine was running again but on low revs so the ‘Ivan Ellen’ escorted the vessel back to Newlyn - both boats arrived safely at 6.00pm

A quick dash across Mount’s Bay yesterday afternoon for the crew of our Inshore lifeboat…two members of the public were cut off by the tide on Chapel Rock, Marazion. Successfully rescued and returned safely to the shore.
Crew : Helm James Roberts, Andrew Wood, Amy Smith & Tom Matson.
RNLI Volunteer Helm James Roberts says, ‘The tide can come in very quickly and catch people out. Fortunately, today no one was hurt, however we would urge people to check the tide timetables before walking along the shoreline. We would always recommend that people carry a means of calling for help and if they get into difficulties dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’

Penlee all-weather relief lifeboat ‘Volunteer Spirit’ and her volunteer crew launched at 1.30am this morning after receiving a tasking request from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.
A single handed yachtsman was in difficulties 9 nautical miles SSW of Mousehole after losing steering in a strong easterly wind that was blowing up to 30 knots and very choppy sea conditions.
The solo yachtsman was attempting to cover 1000 miles to qualify for the mini Trans Atlantic race and was only 80 miles short when he got into difficulties. He had sailed from Concarneau to the west of the Isles of Scilly, then to the SE coast of Ireland and was heading back to France.
‘Volunteer Spirit’ arrived on scene in 30 minutes - because the yacht was making very little headway and had no engine it was decided to tow it to Newlyn Harbour.
The yachtsman dropped his sails and a tow rope was eventually connected, both boats arrived safely in Newlyn at 4.30am. After refuelling and a wash down the volunteer crew headed home for a couple of hours sleep before going to work.

At 4.13pm yesterday afternoon the volunteer crew of the reserve lifeboat ‘Volunteer Spirit’ were paged by the Coastguard Operations Centre at Falmouth - just 8 minutes later at 4.21pm the all-weather lifeboat was heading out through the gaps.
A pan-pan call had been received from the fishing vessel Ocean Pride FH24 which was taking in water at a considerable rate 9 nautical miles south of Porthcurno. The container ship ‘Mirror’ was standing by awaiting the arrival of our lifeboat.
With Emergency Coxswain
Neville Pittman
at the helm, and crew members Tony Rendle, James Roberts, Andrew Wood, Amy Smith, Stuart Farrell and Adrian Thomas onboard, the lifeboat sped to the scene arriving about 25 minutes later.
On arrival the situation was critical for the crew of the Ocean Pride - she was taking in water through her stern tube at such a rate that the 4/5 onboard pumps could not keep up with the flow.
The lifeboat immediately went alongside the Ocean Pride, attached a tow rope, and crew member James Roberts managed to scramble on board - FH24 is a very high sided vessel so this was no mean feat! Another salvage pump was set up allowing the Ocean Pride to cut her engines. This slowed the ingress of water slightly and was just about keeping her afloat.
We were then joined by the Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 924 - they hovered above and winched down another salvage pump to the deck of the Ocean Pride - this helped to stem the flow of water.
The Ocean Pride was towed slowly back to Newlyn - on arrival our reserve Inshore lifeboat ‘Tabby Cat’ was waiting to act as a brake to bring the vessel safely into harbour. The lifeboat crew then had to wait for high tide in order to put the Ocean Pride on the hard to assess damage and effect repairs.
Coxswain Neville Pittman said ‘It was a critical first shout for me to cut my teeth on! Salvage pumps, helicopters, towing, the lot, my comprehensive RNLI training certainly kicked in! The lifeboat crew did a very professional job - this was definitely a vessel and 6 lives saved’.
The crew have since received this lovely thank you from Tamarra Laity, one of the Ocean Pride families;
‘A huge Thank You 🤗... I can't and won't ever be able to thank you guys enough for bringing our boys safely home... Not only that but staying with them and helping them to make safe and secure our Ocean Pride FH24... Thank You so much 🌈 🌈... 🐞

At 11.42am this morning the volunteer crew of the Inshore lifeboat Mollie and Ivor Dent were again heading out of Newlyn harbour on another shout.
Helm Ben Keogh, and crew members Andrew Wood and Max Rowe were tasked by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre who had received reports of a small fishing vessel firing a distress flare in Mount’s Bay.
The Mollie and Ivor Dent was quickly on scene and promptly assessed the situation. The crew spoke to the skipper of the 20-foot local fishing boat, establishing that the engine had a fuel block. An anchor had been put out but with a very strong NE wind it was dragging and blowing the vessel towards the shore. The skipper took exactly the right action and immediately fired a distress flare which was seen and reported by many people on the shore.
The lifeboat took the vessel under tow and safely back to Newlyn.

Penlee All Weather Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched on service at 17:45 this evening.
The Lizard Lifeboat that launched at 12pm was heading towards Newlyn towing a small fishing vessel which had been reported drifting upturned 25 miles SSW of the Lizard Point.
The Lizard crew once on scene managed to refloat the vessel, pump it out, connect a rope to start towing into Mounts Bay.
Knowing that our colleagues had been out for several hours assistance was offered to take over the tow.
Penlee Lifeboat met The Lizard Lifeboat 6 miles SE of Newlyn, passed over 6 portions of fish and chips which was very much appreciated and took over the towing duties, Lizard Lifeboat headed back to station arriving at 7pm.
Penlee towed the vessel into Newlyn Harbour arriving at 19:30.

Penlee Inshore Lifeboat ‘Mollie & Ivor Dent’ received a tasking request at 17:37 this evening from Falmouth Costguard.
A surfer was reported to be in difficulties at Porthcurno in poor weather conditions so the Inshore Lifeboat was tasked to assist Sennen Cove Lifeboat in a search for the surfer.
Thankfully the surfer managed to get back to the beach just as the lifeboats launched.
With a WNW gale blowing it was too poor for Sennen Cove Lifeboat to rehouse so they steamed to Newlyn Harbour hoping to rehouse tomorrow.

Penlee Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ received a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguard at 21:23 last night.
A 31ft Trimaran on route from Wales to Chichester got into difficulties due to a strong easterly wind and rough seas requested assistance 10 miles SE of Newlyn with 2 persons on board.
Ivan Ellen with her volunteer crew launched immediately and arrived on scene at 22:08. The yachts forsail had jammed up and  shredded, the centre board was damaged which resulted in no steering so it was decided by the coxswain to tow the vessel to Newlyn Harbour.
At 10:30 after a bit of a struggle to connect the tow rope the tow was eventually commenced and both vessels headed towards Newlyn.
At around Midnight Penlee Inshore Lifeboat ‘ Mollie & Ivor Dent’ launched to assist Towing the yacht through the Harbour entrance and berth it alongside.
At 00:30 both Lifeboats were washed down re fueled and ready for service.

At 09:05 this morning our Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ launched on service after receiving a tasking request from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.
A member of the public found some clothing on Marazion beach which raised concerns that a person could be in difficulties in the sea. The
‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ and her volunteer crew were tasked to conduct a shoreline search between Penzance and Marazion.
Our colleagues from
Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team
were also tasked and searched along the beach/shoreline between Penzance and Marazion.
At 10:30am
Devon & Cornwall Police
confirmed that clothes belonged to a female who was safe and well - all units were then stood down.
Although this was a false alarm reported with very good intent, the search was well co-ordinated by Falmouth Coastguard and demonstrated the excellent interagency teamwork of all those involved.
The ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ returned to station and was made ready for her next service at 10:45am
Crew - Andrew Wood (Helm), Amy Smith, & Max Rowe.
Weather - light westerly breeze, 1m swell.

Earlier this evening the all-weather lifeboat Ivan Ellen and her volunteer crew launched on service from Newlyn. They were tasked to search for a 24-foot motor cruiser, with two persons onboard, which was on passasge from Hayle to Plymouth. The vessel had lost its rudder, was unable to steer, and the crew were unsure of their position.
The Ivan Ellen was quickly on scene and a tow was set up. The motor cruiser was towed safely back to Newlyn, rafted alongside, and placed on a berth in the harbour.

Earlier this evening the pagers sounded and the volunteer crew of our Atlantic 85 Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ were tasked to launch by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre - a small sailing dinghy with two persons onboard was struggling against a northerly wind in Mount’s Bay. The lifeboat was quickly on scene and the dinghy was towed safely back to Penzance Harbour.
