At 1.47pm this afternoon the pagers sounded and the Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ and her volunteer crew were tasked to launch by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.

A 20-foot speedboat, with two persons onboard, had suffered engine failure off Porthcurno.

At 1.52pm, just as the Inshore lifeboat was about to launch from Newlyn the crew were redirected to another incident - a concerned member of the public had contacted HM Coastguard via the 999 system and reported seeing a 17-foot fast angling boat, with two persons onboard, in difficulties about 400 yards off the shore at Rinsey Head - the occupants of this vessel were waving a paddle to draw attention to their predicament.

In view of the fact that the vessel at Porthcurno was safely at anchor, the ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ sped across Mount’s Bay to Rinsey Head. On arrival they found that two fishing boats from Porthleven already had the casualty under tow. The Inshore lifeboat ‘Stood By’ for a short time and then returned to Newlyn.

In the meantime the all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched from Newlyn, headed down the western shore, and located the casualty vessel at anchor off Porthcurno - the speedboat was towed back to Penzance Harbour.

ILB Crew - Andrew Wood (Helm), James Roberts and Amy Smith.

ALB Crew - Cox Patch Harvey, Mech Tony Rendle, Dan Sell, Andrew Stevens, Adrian Thomas and Neville Pittman.

At 11.42am this morning the volunteer crew of the Inshore lifeboat Mollie and Ivor Dent were again heading out of Newlyn harbour on another shout.
Helm Ben Keogh, and crew members Andrew Wood and Max Rowe were tasked by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre who had received reports of a small fishing vessel firing a distress flare in Mount’s Bay.
The Mollie and Ivor Dent was quickly on scene and promptly assessed the situation. The crew spoke to the skipper of the 20-foot local fishing boat, establishing that the engine had a fuel block. An anchor had been put out but with a very strong NE wind it was dragging and blowing the vessel towards the shore. The skipper took exactly the right action and immediately fired a distress flare which was seen and reported by many people on the shore.
The lifeboat took the vessel under tow and safely back to Newlyn.

At 11.00pm last night both Penlee lifeboats launched on service after receiving a tasking request from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.
Devon & Cornwall Police
were trying to locate a person on a yacht,  thought to be in the Mount’s Bay area, that had suffered some injuries and asked our lifeboats for assistance.
The yacht was quickly located and two volunteer crew members from the all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ assisted the Police with the casualty. The Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ stood by in case a medivac was required.
At 01:30 both lifeboats left the scene and returned to Newlyn.

Penlee All Weather Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched on service at 17:45 this evening.
The Lizard Lifeboat that launched at 12pm was heading towards Newlyn towing a small fishing vessel which had been reported drifting upturned 25 miles SSW of the Lizard Point.
The Lizard crew once on scene managed to refloat the vessel, pump it out, connect a rope to start towing into Mounts Bay.
Knowing that our colleagues had been out for several hours assistance was offered to take over the tow.
Penlee Lifeboat met The Lizard Lifeboat 6 miles SE of Newlyn, passed over 6 portions of fish and chips which was very much appreciated and took over the towing duties, Lizard Lifeboat headed back to station arriving at 7pm.
Penlee towed the vessel into Newlyn Harbour arriving at 19:30.

Penlee Inshore Lifeboat ‘Mollie & Ivor Dent’ received a tasking request at 17:37 this evening from Falmouth Costguard.
A surfer was reported to be in difficulties at Porthcurno in poor weather conditions so the Inshore Lifeboat was tasked to assist Sennen Cove Lifeboat in a search for the surfer.
Thankfully the surfer managed to get back to the beach just as the lifeboats launched.
With a WNW gale blowing it was too poor for Sennen Cove Lifeboat to rehouse so they steamed to Newlyn Harbour hoping to rehouse tomorrow.

Penlee Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ received a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguard at 21:23 last night.
A 31ft Trimaran on route from Wales to Chichester got into difficulties due to a strong easterly wind and rough seas requested assistance 10 miles SE of Newlyn with 2 persons on board.
Ivan Ellen with her volunteer crew launched immediately and arrived on scene at 22:08. The yachts forsail had jammed up and  shredded, the centre board was damaged which resulted in no steering so it was decided by the coxswain to tow the vessel to Newlyn Harbour.
At 10:30 after a bit of a struggle to connect the tow rope the tow was eventually commenced and both vessels headed towards Newlyn.
At around Midnight Penlee Inshore Lifeboat ‘ Mollie & Ivor Dent’ launched to assist Towing the yacht through the Harbour entrance and berth it alongside.
At 00:30 both Lifeboats were washed down re fueled and ready for service.

At 09:05 this morning our Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ launched on service after receiving a tasking request from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.
A member of the public found some clothing on Marazion beach which raised concerns that a person could be in difficulties in the sea. The
‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ and her volunteer crew were tasked to conduct a shoreline search between Penzance and Marazion.
Our colleagues from
Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team
were also tasked and searched along the beach/shoreline between Penzance and Marazion.
At 10:30am
Devon & Cornwall Police
confirmed that clothes belonged to a female who was safe and well - all units were then stood down.
Although this was a false alarm reported with very good intent, the search was well co-ordinated by Falmouth Coastguard and demonstrated the excellent interagency teamwork of all those involved.
The ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ returned to station and was made ready for her next service at 10:45am
Crew - Andrew Wood (Helm), Amy Smith, & Max Rowe.
Weather - light westerly breeze, 1m swell.

At 6.55pm this evening the Penlee all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched on service from Newlyn after receiving a tasking from the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre - reports had been received that two persons were in the sea to the east of Penzance after their sailing vessel had capsized and were in need of immediate assistance.
Thankfully a local vessel, which was close by, witnessed the incident and pulled the two casualties onboard just before the lifeboat arrived on scene.
After a quick assessment by the volunteer crew it was established that the casualties were fine, just a little cold and shaken up. They where quickly taken to Penzance Harbour and handed over to our colleagues from the
Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team
The casualties were wrapped in blankets and seated inside the Coastguard vehicle to warm up.
The ‘Ivan Ellen’ lifeboat then recovered the submerged vessel and towed it to Penzance Harbour.
Many thanks to all those involved in this evenings rescue, especially the local vessels who gave assistance and stood by - much appreciated.

At 3.55pm this afternoon the crew pagers sounded and both Penlee lifeboats were tasked to launch by the Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.
Adrian Thomas, volunteer lifeboat crew member and skipper of the Mermaid pleasure boat out of Penzance, had spotted five kayaks with young people onboard off Lamorna. They appeared to be struggling against wind and tide and he was worried about their safety. Adrian reported his concerns to Falmouth Coastguard and a tasking request was generated.
The Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ was on scene first, closely followed by the all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’. Three kayaks and four casualties were recovered from the sea off Carn Dhu and taken onboard the all-weather lifeboat, whilst the Inshore lifeboat went into Lamorna Cove and recovered one kayaker and his kayak who had already made it ashore. A very speedy and well coordinated rescue by Falmouth Coastguard, and a good result all round.
The weary kayakers were returned to Mousehole Harbour and placed safely on shore.

At 8.00pm last night the Penlee lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched on service to assist an injured crew man onboard a 90-metre merchant vessel Arklow Faith.
The vessel, which was on route to Norway from Ceuta in Spain, was 70 miles SSW of Newlyn when the accident happened.
Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre were informed that a Russian crew man had dislocated his shoulder and was in a lot of pain.
After a discussion between Falmouth Coastguard and the Penlee Lifeboat Operations Manager it was agreed that Arklow Faith should head towards Mount’s Bay for the casualty transfer.
At 8.00pm the ‘Ivan Ellen’ lifeboat launched and met the vessel 14 miles SW of Newlyn.
Once on scene Coxswain Patch Harvey advised the captain to steer the Arklow Faith due east at 6 knots - an attempt would then be made to transfer the injured crewman to the lifeboat by coming alongside whilst underway.
Despite the fine weather the 2m swell meant that the lifeboat had to time its approach to perfection - when the Arklow Faith wasn’t rolling. The evacuation procedure went according to plan and the injured crewman was transferred safely to the lifeboat. The Ivan Ellen then made haste, heading towards Newlyn at 20 knots, arriving in the harbour just before 10.00pm.
On arrival they were met by paramedics from
South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust
- the injured crewman was assessed onboard the lifeboat before be taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Truro by ambulance.
Crew - Patch (Cox),Marcel Le Breton (Mech), Dan Sell, Neville Pitman, Andrew Stevens, Mike Isles, and Max Rowe.
Weather - WNW 4, 2m Swell.

Busy afternoon for our volunteer lifeboat crews...
At 3.40 pm the Penlee all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ was tasked by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre to assist a 36-foot yacht whose skipper had been taken to Newlyn by Sennen Cove Lifeboat after suffering with chest pains South of Lands End.
Penlee Lifeboat met the yacht 1 nautical mile south of St Loy and a crew man was put on board to join a crew man from Sennen Cove Lifeboat. Both crew members assisted the single occupant left on board the yacht.
A tow rope was attached and the yacht was towed towards Newlyn by the ‘Ivan Ellen’ lifeboat. Sennen Cove Lifeboat had already made haste to Newlyn harbour where the yachts skipper was dropped off. The casualty was taken to hospital by ambulance. Sennen Cove lifeboat then headed out of Newlyn, picked up their crew member off Lamorna, then headed back to station.
Penlee Lifeboat continued to tow the yacht into Newlyn harbour and safely birthed the her alongside the quay at 5.30pm, a good job done by both lifeboat crews.
Just as the Penlee Crew were returning to the boathouse, after washing down and refuelling, the pagers sounded again.
This time the Inshore Lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent launched to investigate reports of a family in an inflatable kayak being blown off shore at Wherry Town, Penzance. Quickly on scene, the family confirmed they were ok and didn’t require assistance so the Inshore lifeboat returned to Newlyn Harbour.
A busy afternoon for our lifeboat crews and Falmouth Coastguard.

We were paged by Falmouth Coast Guard Operations Centre at 17.56 to assist the
Devon & Cornwall Police
in searching for a missing person.
Once on scene, the Officer in charge from Penzance CRT obtained detailed information from the police and search teams were deployed.
Due to the large area to cover
Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team
,
Porthleven Coastguard Team
and both
Penlee Lifeboat
s were tasked.
Search teams then started searching from Mousehole to Perranuthnoe along with both
Penlee Lifeboat
s.
As the searches were well on their way, information came in that a person fitting the description of the missing person was at Lamorna Cove.
With this information both Penlee lifeboats headed to Lamorna Cove as well as Penzance CRT and Lands End CRT.
Once at Lamorna, the casualty was located and checked over and then passed to the paramedic from
South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust
and police.
Also on scene was S11B and
West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team
.
We would also like to thank the members of public who helped the casualty for their quick thinking .

At just after 6.15pm yesterday evening, the Coastguard Operations Centre at Falmouth received a report that a climber had fallen down the cliff edge on the eastern side of Trewavas Cliff at Rinsey.
Both our lifeboats were tasked to launch -
Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team
and
Porthleven Coastguard Team
were also tasked to attend. The all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ and the Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ were soon heading across Mount’s Bay, arriving quickly on scene. Our main task was to locate the casualty, to guide the Coastguard Rescue helicopter’924’ to the exact position, and to provide safety cover during the casualty air lift.
As always, this was a well coordinated search and rescue operation which resulted in the safe evacuation of the casualty and a swift transfer to hospital.
Both lifeboats returned to Newlyn at 8.45pm and were made ready for their next service.

It’s another sad day for Penlee Lifeboat Station - our flag is flying at half mast in tribute to retired crew member Nimrod Bawden, father of our Lifeboat Press Officer, who passed away earlier today.
Nim joined the Penlee Lifeboat under Coxswain Jack Worth in 1957. He was a ‘runner’ before joining the crew, and would regularly sprint from his cottage in Mousehole to the lifeboat station at Penlee Point to assist with the launching process - his beloved RNLI jumper was always ready and waiting just in case!
In 1960 Nim joined the Solomon Browne lifeboat, first as bowman and then as assistant mechanic, taking part in many long and arduous rescues, including the Jeanne Gougy, Juan Ferrer, Torrie Canyon, Temeraire, and the Firth Fisher, to name but a few - he was a loyal, dedicated, hard working, well respected volunteer with the heart of a lion...he served until 1975...the lifeboat always came first.
Our thoughts are with Eve, Elaine, Emma, Harriet and all his family.
Another loyal member of our lifeboat family has crossed the bar...

This morning (Friday 19 June) at 9.30am the volunteer crew at RNLI Penlee launched to rescue a deer that was in distress in Penzance
Coxswain Patch Harvey, received a call from a Penlee volunteer crew member who was near Penzance Harbour at Ross Bridge and could see a deer swimming around trying to find its way out. The deer appeared to be swimming competently at this time and the tide was dropping so they thought the wild animal may be able to get onto dry land soon.
The deer was then startled by the noises of the harbour – moving boats, Scillonian maintenance workers and the general public passing by – and so it began to swim out through the gap.
At 9.30am, Penlee Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ was launched to rescue the deer from the water. Local swimmers at Battery Rocks saw the deer swimming around and pointed the volunteer crew in the right direction.
The crew then calmly approached the deer and lifted it into the lifeboat, wrapping it in a blanket and lightly covering its head to reduce stress.
When they arrived back at the station, Patch phoned the RSPCA but unfortunately nobody was able to help them immediately so they were given permission to release the deer into an open field. They drove the deer up to Paul, a village just beyond Newlyn, and released it safely into the wild.
Patch Harvey, Coxswain Mechanic, said:
‘Safety is our top priority and to limit the risk of anybody else being hurt in this circumstance – we wanted to help the distressed animal and reduce the risk of a member of public attempting to rescue the deer themselves.’
