At 1.47pm this afternoon the pagers sounded and the Inshore lifeboat ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ and her volunteer crew were tasked to launch by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre.

A 20-foot speedboat, with two persons onboard, had suffered engine failure off Porthcurno.

At 1.52pm, just as the Inshore lifeboat was about to launch from Newlyn the crew were redirected to another incident - a concerned member of the public had contacted HM Coastguard via the 999 system and reported seeing a 17-foot fast angling boat, with two persons onboard, in difficulties about 400 yards off the shore at Rinsey Head - the occupants of this vessel were waving a paddle to draw attention to their predicament.

In view of the fact that the vessel at Porthcurno was safely at anchor, the ‘Mollie and Ivor Dent’ sped across Mount’s Bay to Rinsey Head. On arrival they found that two fishing boats from Porthleven already had the casualty under tow. The Inshore lifeboat ‘Stood By’ for a short time and then returned to Newlyn.

In the meantime the all-weather lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ launched from Newlyn, headed down the western shore, and located the casualty vessel at anchor off Porthcurno - the speedboat was towed back to Penzance Harbour.

ILB Crew - Andrew Wood (Helm), James Roberts and Amy Smith.

ALB Crew - Cox Patch Harvey, Mech Tony Rendle, Dan Sell, Andrew Stevens, Adrian Thomas and Neville Pittman.

Onboard 📸 by crew member Andrew Stevens.

It's the RNLI's 202nd birthday today and although our lifesaving purpose remains the same, it’s safe to say things look a little different now. And digging through our archives, we remind you  how far we've come, from station and crew kit changes to lifeboat and launch and recovery vehicle updates.

Penlee RNLI have a long list of volunteer teams that can their history back to Penzance Lifeboat Station which was the base for Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) operations in Mount's Bay in Cornwall. The first lifeboat to be placed at Penzance was in 1803.

It’s amazing to see our supporters and dedicated volunteers were just as enthusiastic then as they are today. 202 years of lifesaving wouldn't be possible without your continued support.

Thank you for being behind every rescue, every reunion and every life saved.

Late Call-out for Penlee Volunteers.
Penlee All Weather Lifeboat ‘Ivan Ellen’ received a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguard at 22:05 last Night.
A 20m towing vessel suffered a complete power failure 9 miles SSE of Newlyn with four persons onboard.
The vessel lost all power losing all lighting, navigation aids and main engine. The vessel was also in a busy shipping area and posed a navigational hazard to other vessels.
Penlee All Weather Lifeboat launched 7 minutes after the initial tasking request, under the command of coxswain Patch Harvey and six volunteer crew the lifeboat arrived on scene at 22:45.
A merchant vessel that was near by when incident occurred stood by until the Lifeboat arrived..
Due to the casualty vessel being dead in the water and causing a navigation hazard the assessment was made that the safest option would be to attempt to tow the vessel to Newlyn Harbour.
At 23:00 the tow line was attached, despite the size and weight of the vessel the Severn class lifeboat with 2500 hp towed the vessel between 4-4.5 knots at low revs towards Newlyn.
The lifeboat crew then set up an alongside tow just outside the harbour gaps and towed the casualty vessel through the entrance to a berth inside the harbour unassisted after two and a half hours towing.
At 01:45 ‘Ivan Ellen’ was declared ready for its next service after being re-fuelled and washed down.
Coxswain Patch Harvey said ‘despite the size and weight of the towing vessel that required assistance our Severn Class lifeboat towed it safely and comfortably, also my crew did a great job rigging and passing the tow initially and then setting up the alongside tow close to the harbour’.
Weather conditions were a SE 3-4, 1m swell with good visibilit

Penlee Lifeboat Station’s all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat the Ivan Ellen was launched on service just before 6pm on 9th October 2025 after receiving a tasking request from Falmouth Coastguard to a 36ft yacht which had suffered engine failure five miles SE of Newlyn with two persons onboard.
The yacht skipper had done his best to sail as close to Newlyn as possible but with little wind and no engine they required assistance.
Coxswain Patch Harvey launched quickly and with a crew of six RNLI volunteers made the short trip across the bay. Assessing the situation ‘Patch’ decided the safest option was to tow the yacht to the nearest safe harbour Newlyn.
Penlee Lifeboat towed the yacht close to the harbour entrance then set up an alongside tow so that the yacht could be safely manoeuvred to a berth in the harbour.
The lifeboat was washed down and refueled in preparation for its next service.

At 11:30am on 5th April 2025 Falmouth Coastguard tasked the Penlee Lifeboat to Kynance Cove where a dog had been reported at the base of a cliff.
The all-weather Severn Class Lifeboat the Ivan Ellen was launched immediately under Coxswain Neville Pittman with a crew of six RNLI volunteers and made best speed across the bay in a moderate to rough sea with the easterly wind gusting to force 7-8.
On arrival at Kynance Cove the Y-boat was launched from the Ivan Ellen with helm Will Treneer and crew Aaron Clayton proceeding to the cliff base. Aaron was dropped off to recover the dog which was taken by them to its welcoming owners at a nearby beach.
Mullion Coastguard Rescue Team also attended and fortunately the dog suffered no obvious injuries.
Penlee Lifeboat and its crew returned to Newlyn to wash down and prepare for the next shout arriving just after 2:00pm.

The swimmer had got into difficulties at Hope Point near Praa Sands due to rough sea conditions and strong tides and was seen waving for help.
